Northminster Presbyterian Church began its journey on October 29,1954 when a small group gathered to discuss the organization of a Town and Country area Presbyterian Church. That group later quickly called Rev. Robert N. McLean, Jr. to be their pastor (lower center photo). The name of the church at that time was Town and Country Presbyterian Church. The church's present name was adopted on November 20, 1955, at the Service of Organization where the future home of the church, 3235 Pope Avenue was announced.
The church's first worship space was a rental home used for Sunday worship as well as Children's, Youth, and Adult classes (see lower right photo). The church grew quickly, the present property was purchased, and the first phase of the campus was built. In 1966 the campus was expanded with a new larger sanctuary to minister to a growing congregation. Fellowship remained the heart of Northminster from the intimate community inside the rental house to the numerous Marinership Groups hosted at several homes across Arden-Arcade as the church grew. Several affinity groups that connected people to shared passions grew at time, groups like the Mellow Milers and the Sewing and Looming groups.
Throughout Northminster's history the church has served its community, leading in ministries like the Brown Bag Ministry, which offered grocery resources, partnership focuses with Dyer Kelly Elementary School to resource families and teachers alike with school supplies, TESOL programs, and Christmas gifts. At one time Northminster also owned and operated a large family campground as a way to offer a resource for rest and spiritual development to the Sacramento area. As you visit Northminster, you will meet a church family with a wonderful history of fellowship, service, and worship. We look forward to meeting you soon!
